The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Wednesday strongly condemned the reported assault of a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) by a student, following a dispute over a TikTok video.

In a statement issued from Ibadan, Oyo State, NANS Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, reiterated the association’s dedication to advocating for students’ rights while upholding discipline, respect for authority, and compliance with institutional regulations.

Akinteye emphasized that violence and misconduct have no place in academic settings across the nation, urging students to respect the authority of their institutions.

“NANS has consistently championed students’ rights, academic freedom, and a conducive learning environment,” he stated.

“However, we equally stand for discipline, respect for authority, and adherence to the rules governing our educational institutions. It is in this context that we categorically condemn the reported assault of a lecturer at UNIZIK over a TikTok video.”

He described the incident as wholly unacceptable, noting that academic institutions should be places where mutual respect between students and lecturers prevails.

“While students are entitled to self-expression, including through social media, such rights must be exercised with responsibility and respect for others. The actions of the student in this case are deeply embarrassing and do not reflect the values upheld by the Nigerian student community,” Akinteye added.

He reiterated that while NANS is committed to defending students’ rights and welfare, it will not support any student who disrespects lecturers, breaks the law, or tarnishes the reputation of the academic community.

“NANS stands for responsible student leadership and discipline, and we will not hesitate to call out actions that go against these principles,” he said.

Akinteye also called on UNIZIK’s management to carry out a thorough, impartial investigation to establish the facts of the case. He urged that all parties involved be given a fair hearing, and that appropriate sanctions be imposed if the student is found guilty, in line with the institution’s regulations, to serve as a deterrent.

“The academic environment must remain a space for respect, learning, and professional engagement,” Akinteye concluded.
