The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Central Working Committee (CWC) has instructed workers and other concerned citizens to boycott the services of major telecom companies — MTN, Airtel, and Glo — starting at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 13, 2025, in response to recent tariff hikes.
The directive was issued in a statement by NLC President Joe Ajaero and NLC Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja on Wednesday.
“The CWC demands an immediate rollback of the tariff increase, which took effect today, and insists the companies revert to the previous rates until the committee concludes its discussions and reaches a resolution,” the statement read.
“As an initial step to protest this unjustified price hike, the CWC has ordered that, starting Thursday, February 13, 2025, Nigerian workers and any willing citizens will refrain from using the services of MTN, Airtel, and Glo from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM daily, continuing through the end of February 2025.”
The Congress also criticized the government for failing to protect the public from corporate exploitation.
Additionally, the NLC reviewed the ongoing Tax Reform Bills, cautioning against policies that could further burden Nigerian workers. While the need for fiscal reforms was acknowledged, the NLC pledged to advocate for tax policies that are fair and beneficial to workers.
Should the tariff hike not be reversed by February 29, 2025, the NLC has announced plans to launch a nationwide telecom shutdown on March 1, 2025. The Congress is calling on civil society groups and all Nigerians to join the protest against exploitative economic practices.
