Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has reiterated his dedication to education, healthcare, and empowerment as essential pillars for national development.
In a statement shared on Friday via X, Obi reflected on his visit to the Mater Misericordiae College of Nursing Sciences in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, where he toured the institution and praised its significant contributions to Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Founded in 1946, the college is one of Nigeria’s earliest healthcare institutions. Its Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, established in 1952 and 1953, have produced thousands of professionals who continue to play crucial roles in the medical field, Obi noted.
Acknowledging the ongoing infrastructure improvements and the enrollment of approximately 1,000 students, Obi expressed his support for the institution’s efforts. As a gesture of commitment, he made an initial donation of ₦10 million to assist in the training of healthcare professionals.
“The college currently enrolls about 1,000 students and is undergoing significant infrastructure upgrades. To support their endeavors, I reiterated my commitment to partnering with them in training Nigerian healthcare professionals and made an initial donation of ₦10 million,” Obi stated.
During his address to the students, Obi stressed the importance of healthcare as a key indicator of human development. He commended nurses and medical professionals for their vital role in national progress, urging students to remain dedicated to their studies, especially considering the increasing global demand for healthcare workers.
Obi also acknowledged the hard work of the institution’s staff and expressed his gratitude to the Ebonyi State Government for its partnership with the school in advancing healthcare education.
“I emphasized the critical role healthcare plays in human development and recognized the invaluable contributions of nurses and medical practitioners in national progress. I encouraged the students to stay focused on their studies, especially with the rising global need for healthcare professionals. I also commended the institution’s staff for their dedication and the excellent work they are doing. Furthermore, I appreciate the Ebonyi State Government for collaborating with the school to promote healthcare education in the state and beyond,” he concluded.
