The Federal Ministry of Works has ordered the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos, following a chaotic gridlock that paralyzed the city on Wednesday.

The bridge was initially closed for planned maintenance and rehabilitation works, but the closure caused hours-long traffic congestion, leaving millions of Lagosians stranded.

David Umahi, the Minister of Works, directed the reopening of the bridge to vehicular traffic, with efforts underway to implement palliative measures to make the bridge motorable.

The Ministry apologized for the inconvenience caused and appealed for public understanding and cooperation.

The necessary repair works on the bridge will be scheduled for a later date, according to the Federal Ministry of Works. T

he reopening of the bridge is expected to bring relief to Lagosians, who experienced severe disruptions to their daily activities due to the gridlock.
