The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has called on Nigerians to embrace religious diversity as a strength rather than a division, encouraging its role in the nation’s development.

Speaking at a special Jumat and thanksgiving service at the Central Mosque in Oyo town, part of his coronation events, he emphasized that religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence are not only legal obligations but essential for a harmonious society, noting that a single religion or culture cannot define the world.

Oba Owoade highlighted the importance of interfaith dialogue, stressing that no religious community holds exclusive claim over society and that every group is entitled to practice their faith in a way that respects the rights of others.

He also advocated for a reformed religious education system in Nigeria, one that fosters understanding of multiple faiths and promotes tolerance, moving away from narrow doctrinal teachings.

Additionally, he encouraged religious leaders to adopt moderate approaches in their sermons and focused on strengthening interfaith relationships at all levels to prevent religious discord.

As the traditional custodian of his people’s heritage, the Alaafin reaffirmed his commitment to honoring and respecting the various cultures and religions of his subjects, ensuring their continued loyalty and reverence.

The acting Chief Imam of Oyoland, Abdulazeez Eleyele, also urged the Alaafin to seek divine guidance throughout his reign and asked the people to pray for his success.

The event was attended by members of the Oyo Mesi, newly elevated Baales, the Owoade Royal family, and members of the coronation organizing committee.
