Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti is scheduled to meet with the club president Florentino Pérez in the coming days to discuss the coach’s future at the club, a source has told Insight Media Sports Arena
Madrid’s 3-2 extra-time defeat to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday, combined with their 5-1 aggregate loss to Arsenal in the Champions League quarterfinals earlier this month, has intensified the uncertainty surrounding Ancelotti’s position. With five games remaining, Madrid sits four points behind the top of LaLiga.
Although Ancelotti has a contract with Madrid until 2026, speculation about his departure has been ongoing throughout the season. ESPN reported last week that discussions have resumed between the Brazilian Football Confederation and Ancelotti’s representatives about him taking over as coach of Brazil’s national team.
A source told Insight Media Sports Arena that Ancelotti and Pérez are set to meet in the next few days, with the expectation that they will agree on the coach’s departure after the final LaLiga match of the season, against Real Sociedad.
Ancelotti, one of the most successful coaches in Madrid’s history, has won three Champions League titles and two LaLiga trophies in two separate stints at the Santiago Bernabéu.
“Whether I continue [at Madrid] is something for the coming weeks, not for today,” Ancelotti said after the loss on Saturday when asked about his future.
Earlier this month, on April 19, Ancelotti acknowledged that both he and the club would “analyze things at the end of the season,” and he did not confirm whether he would lead Madrid during their FIFA Club World Cup campaign this summer.
“We’re still competing for trophies,” Ancelotti added. “I don’t want to discuss my future now. We will talk about it with the club at the end of the season. I’ve always had a great relationship with the club. There will be no confrontation.”
The source did not specify who would take over if Ancelotti leaves, but mentioned that a likely short-term solution could involve an interim internal appointment. Potential candidates for the role include football director Santiago Solari, Castilla coach Raul Gonzalez, or under-19s coach Álvaro Arbeloa, with Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign set to begin on June 18.
