Henry Okunomo, former Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has raised concerns about growing political interference in the student body, warning that NANS is drifting from its core mission.
Speaking with Channels Television, Okunomo pointed to the alleged involvement of President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, as a troubling example.
“NANS is almost losing its identity,” he said. “Without government backing today, it’s hard to win a leadership position.”
Okunomo criticized the increasing alignment of student leaders with political interests, claiming that genuine advocacy for student welfare has taken a back seat. He questioned Seyi Tinubu’s role in NANS, noting that he neither studied in Nigeria nor participated in the union’s activities.
“He’s not a stakeholder. So, what exactly is his interest?” Okunomo asked.
He further alleged that Seyi Tinubu’s involvement has weakened the association’s credibility and urged scrutiny of his influence.
Okunomo also condemned the abuse of political power, warning against the use of authority to intimidate citizens. “No one should hide under the shield of power to harass others. The safety of all citizens should be the president’s priority,” he stated.
