The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, along with two other lawmakers, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The two other defecting legislators are Sunny Ifada, representing Esan Central Constituency, and Yekini Idaiye from Akoko Edo 1 Constituency.
With these defections, the APC now holds a majority in the Edo State House of Assembly with 18 members, while the PDP’s representation has dropped to six.
Also joining the APC are councillors from 17 local government areas, former Deputy Speaker Roland Asoro, former House Majority Leader Nosa Nosayaba, former PDP State Secretary Gabriel Oloruntoba, and several other key political figures.
The defectors were officially welcomed into the APC by the party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, who represented the National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, at the event. Bashiru assured the new members of equal opportunities within the party and described the defections as a major boost to the APC’s influence in Edo State.
Abdullahi Ganduje, in his remarks, highlighted the shift in legislative power from the PDP to the APC and expressed confidence that the party would continue to strengthen ahead of the 2027 general elections with the support of Edo residents.
A total of 192 councillors, 18 local government chairmen, and two state legislators were presented with the APC’s emblem during the ceremony.
Senator Bashiru thanked the defectors for their decision to join the ruling party, stating that re-electing the APC and President Bola Tinubu in 2027 would ensure the continuation of effective governance and national progress.
