Senator Kawu Sumaila, who represents Kano South Senatorial District, has officially left the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Sumaila’s defection letter during Wednesday’s plenary session.
In the letter titled “Notification of defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC)”, Sumaila explained that his departure was driven by “compelling and undeniable developments” that have left the NNPP “severely divided and dysfunctional.”
Citing Section 68(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, Sumaila outlined his reasons: “Over the past months, I’ve witnessed increasing internal conflicts and numerous court cases that have fractured the party’s structure. Issues of leadership legitimacy and unity have led to deep disarray.”
He further noted the emergence of multiple factions within the NNPP, each adopting different logos and claiming authority, a situation he described as a visible and damaging split in both the party’s identity and functionality.
“Given this situation, and in line with democratic principles and my constitutional rights, I have decided to move to the APC which is a more stable national platform,” Sumaila wrote.
He expressed confidence that the APC would provide a better foundation to fulfill his legislative duties and serve the interests of his constituents in Kano South.
