WAEC denies cancellation of 2025 WASSCE English Language exam

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has refuted widespread rumours that the English Language paper for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been cancelled.
A fake press release dated Friday, May 30, 2025, made the rounds on social media, falsely claiming that the May 28 English Language exam had been nullified and would be rescheduled. WAEC has now confirmed that the information is entirely false.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the council dismissed the viral document as the work of “mischief-makers,” asserting that it did not originate from the examination body.
“The management of WAEC wishes to clarify that the said examination has not been cancelled,” the statement read. It was signed by Moyosola Adesina Acting Head of Public Affairs.
WAEC stressed that all its communications are disseminated strictly through its verified social media handles and accredited media platforms. The council urged candidates, parents, schools, and the general public to ignore any unverified news and to always rely on official sources for accurate information.
“We are aware that the false information is being spread to create confusion and panic among candidates. It is a deliberate attempt to discredit the council,” the statement added.
WAEC also addressed concerns over the late-night conduct of the English Language paper on May 28, noting that the delay was part of enhanced efforts to prevent examination malpractice, particularly the leakage of question papers.
Reports suggest that the exam’s unusually late administration may have contributed to the rumours of cancellation. Furthermore, there are ongoing investigations into the alleged leak of the English paper four days before the exam, with suspicions pointing to possible involvement of WAEC officials.
Reassuring the public of its integrity and commitment, WAEC thanked stakeholders for their support over the past 73 years and reiterated its dedication to delivering quality services to Nigerian students.
“Once again, we appreciate the trust placed in us and promise to continue improving our processes in the interest of the Nigerian child,” the council stated.
