Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has described his decision to represent Nigeria instead of England as a life-changing turning point in his football journey.
Speaking in an interview with ARISE TV, the 2024 CAF African Footballer of the Year reflected on the impact of that choice, calling it one of the most important decisions he’s ever made.
“Without a doubt, it changed my career and my life,” Lookman said. “People know that. This is my home. This is my place. I enjoy it here. I am the son of the soil.”
Born in London, Lookman featured for England at youth level before pledging his senior international future to Nigeria. That decision has marked a dramatic upturn in his career, culminating in a sensational hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, which secured Atalanta’s first-ever European title.
Now regarded as one of Europe’s most in-form attackers, the 27-year-old credits his rise to consistency, discipline, and hard work.
“It’s all about self-belief and putting in the work every day,” he said. “When you do that, your confidence grows. You begin to trust the process, and eventually, the results follow.”
Lookman also reflected on the tougher times in his career, including his missed penalty during a loan spell at Fulham. “Every day, I strive to improve, on and off the pitch. That consistency of mindset has been crucial,” he added.
Receiving the CAF African Footballer of the Year award was a particularly emotional moment for the Atalanta star.
“It’s an incredible honour,” he said. “To even be mentioned alongside the legends who’ve won this award is a blessing. I take it with great pride.”
Lookman recently returned to Lagos, where he formally presented his CAF award to President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He also paid a heartfelt visit to Phase 2, the community where he spent part of his childhood with his grandmother and father.
“Bringing the award back home means everything to me,” he said. “I’ve been cradling it all day. Being able to present it to the President and reconnect with where I came from was truly special.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu hailed Lookman as a symbol of the “Greater Lagos Rising” movement and a role model for Nigerian youth.
Asked if he feels fulfilled by his achievements so far, Lookman responded emphatically.
“Definitely not. Retirement isn’t anywhere in my thoughts. I’ve got a long journey ahead, so much more to achieve. This is just the beginning of another chapter.”
Lookman’s recent performances have caught the attention of major Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United. Atalanta have reportedly placed a €50 million valuation on the Nigerian star, whose form, maturity, and work ethic make him one of the most sought-after forwards in European football.
