Real Madrid may be without star forward Kylian Mbappe for their Club World Cup opener against Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, after the Frenchman missed training due to illness.
The match will mark Xabi Alonso’s managerial debut for the Spanish giants at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, but the new head coach could be forced to start without several key players. Defender Antonio Rudiger and midfielder Eduardo Camavinga are both likely to miss the Group H clash.
“Kylian felt slightly better this morning, but not enough to train,” Alonso said. “The heat is intense, so we decided it was best for him to rest. We’ll make a final decision tomorrow morning.”
Alonso also provided updates on Rudiger and Camavinga. “Rudiger gave everything this season and is recovering well , he’ll be the first to return. Camavinga is progressing too but still needs more time.”
Al Hilal, who will also have a new face in the dugout with Simone Inzaghi taking charge after leaving Inter Milan, remain something of an unknown quantity for Real Madrid.
“With a new coach, it’s hard to predict how they’ll play,” Alonso noted. “But our focus is on ourselves. We have to play with hunger, compete at the highest level, and show unity. That passion, that desire to defend the badge, is already there but we need to build on it.”
Alonso also addressed competition at right-back, where veteran Dani Carvajal is being challenged by new signing Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool.
“It’s a privilege to have top-quality players. Trent offers flexibility, while Carva brings personality and fierce competitiveness. Trent’s first impressions have been very positive.”
Asked about Jude Bellingham’s ideal position, Alonso praised the Englishman’s versatility but hinted at a more central role.
“Jude has a midfielder’s soul. He loves being involved and has the quality to make runs forward. Positioning him correctly will be key, bhis attributes are exceptional.”
Alonso also shared his admiration for Luka Modric, who is nearing the end of his time at the club.
“Working with Luka is a pleasure. We’ve always had a great relationship, and now as coach and player, it’s no different. He’s a role model for the younger players. These final weeks with him will be a privilege, he his truly a player of his era.”
