The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has urged Nigerian students to steer clear of internet fraud and focus on positive, productive uses of the internet.
In a statement released on Monday in Abuja by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, Olukoyede made this call during a one-day symposium titled “Safe Campus for Students: Combating Physical and Digital Threats,” hosted by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.
Speaking through ACE I Williams Oseghale, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the Benin Zonal Directorate, Olukoyede warned students against engaging in cybercrime, commonly referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo.”
He emphasized that such illegal activities undermine Nigeria’s economy, deter foreign investments, and sabotage genuine development efforts.
Instead, he encouraged students to channel their creativity into ventures that support national growth.
Olukoyede raised concern over the growing trend of internet fraud among youths and cautioned that the pursuit of quick wealth leads to lasting consequences.
“There is no shortcut to wealth and fame,” he said “criminal activities may bring temporary gain, but they ultimately lead to suffering and regret. We urge young people to shun Yahoo Yahoo it is not a sustainable path.”
He further urged students to regard corruption as a national enemy, calling on them to become whistleblowers and active agents of change in the fight against graft.
“Understanding the harm caused by corruption should inspire you to be part of the solution by rejecting it and helping expose it,” he added.
Prof. Sunday Samuel, Acting Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, praised the EFCC and other speakers for their insights. He reiterated the institution’s dedication to maintaining a safe academic environment.
“A secure campus, free from both physical and digital threats, is essential for academic success and personal growth,” he said.
Ojumoola Timileyin, Chairman of NANS JCC at the university, thanked the EFCC for its impactful engagement.
“Your presence and message left a lasting impression on all participants,” he noted.
