State Chairmen of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have thrown their weight behind the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, along with two other top officials, over allegations of financial misconduct.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the Chairman of the Forum of State Chairmen and Lagos State SDP Chairman, Femi Olaniyi, called for a thorough investigation into the claims. He was joined by 22 other state chairmen in endorsing the action.
Olaniyi stressed the importance of upholding transparency and integrity within the party, clarifying that the move was not driven by political motives or linked to any potential alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
“This is not about APC, PDP, or any political agenda. It’s about accountability and doing what’s right for the SDP,” he said.
Earlier this week, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) suspended Gabam, National Auditor Nze Nnadi Clarkson, and National Youth Leader Uchechukwu Chukwuma. The decision followed allegations of unauthorized financial activities, including embezzlement and the diversion of party funds.
In a statement, SDP National Publicity Secretary Araba Rufus Aiyenigba said the NWC acted under Articles 19.1, 19.3(i), and 19.5 of the SDP Constitution (2022 as amended), citing “overwhelming evidence” of misconduct such as illicit fund transfers and personal enrichment.
Party insiders confirmed that the suspension notice has been officially communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
