The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagum, has announced that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has affirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the PDP’s National Secretary.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday following the NEC meeting held at the party’s national secretariat, Damagum stated that the gathering was convened specifically to address the party’s engagement with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concerning the national secretary position.
“We just concluded our 100th NEC meeting, which focused on a single agenda which is our engagement with INEC regarding the office of the national secretary,” Damagum said. “The NEC unanimously agreed that Senator Anyanwu will continue in his role as national secretary.”
He further disclosed that the next NEC meeting has been scheduled for July 23, during which critical decisions regarding the party’s convention will be made. According to Damagum, he and Anyanwu will jointly send a formal notification to INEC about the upcoming meeting.
Commenting on the atmosphere of the meeting, Damagum noted that it went smoothly, contrary to expectations by some critics who anticipated division.
“This meeting has disappointed those who hoped for internal strife,” he remarked. “The PDP remains the only political party in the country with the internal capacity to resolve its issues without rancour.”
He added that all PDP governors and National Working Committee (NWC) members were present and united, emphasizing the party’s internal cohesion and dismissing concerns about conflicting public statements.
