Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed deep sorrow over the death of his national teammate Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident on Thursday.
Jota, 28, who played as a forward for both Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, died alongside his younger brother, Andre, when their car veered off a motorway and caught fire in the early hours of the morning near Cernadilla, Zamora province, Spain.
In a heartfelt tribute shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Ronaldo said: “It makes no sense. We were just together with the national team… you had just gotten married.”
He added: “To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.”
Jota’s untimely passing comes barely a month after he and Ronaldo shared a joyful moment on the pitch, celebrating Portugal’s Nations League victory over Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout.
