Popular Nigerian medical doctor and health influencer, Chinonso Egemba, widely known as Aproko Doctor, has cautioned that consuming improperly processed garri may pose a risk to eyesight due to toxic compounds found in cassava, its main ingredient.
In a video posted on Monday, Egemba explained that cassava contains cyanogenic glycosides—specifically linamarin and lotaustralin—which can produce hydrogen cyanide during processing. If not properly eliminated, this toxic substance can harm the body, particularly the optic nerve and retina, leading to potential vision problems.
“This hydrogen cyanide can affect different tissues, including the eyes,” he said. “Research even shows that frequent Garri consumption is linked to reduced visual acuity.”
However, he emphasized that garri is safe to eat when processed correctly. Proper steps such as fermentation and thorough drying significantly reduce the harmful chemical to safe levels.
“If your garri is well-processed—crispy, sour, and fully dried—it won’t cause blindness,” Egemba reassured. He urged consumers to avoid moist garri, which may suggest poor fermentation, and instead opt for sealed, NAFDAC-approved products.
He concluded by urging NAFDAC to increase surveillance on locally sold garri to ensure public safety, stressing the importance of knowing how and where one’s food is processed.
