The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Tinubu. The holiday is part of the ongoing seven-day period of national mourning declared in Buhari’s memory.
Buhari died at a medical facility in London, a development confirmed by his former Special Adviser, Garba Shehu.
A statement from the Ministry of Interior, signed by Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani, noted that the holiday will allow Nigerians time to reflect on Buhari’s legacy, leadership, and contributions to national development and democracy.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and a strong commitment to national unity and progress,” the statement read.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to use the day to foster peace, patriotism, and unity principles the late president stood for throughout his public service.
As part of the official mourning, national flags will remain at half-mast until Sunday, July 20, 2025.
The government also expressed its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
