Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the loss as profoundly personal.
In a heartfelt tribute released on Monday, Mohammed said Buhari was more than a leader or former boss, he was a mentor, a pillar of strength and a father figure.
“I have lost not just a leader, but someone who guided, supported, and believed in me completely,” he stated.
Mohammed praised Buhari’s defining attributes, calling him a patriot of unwavering principles, an incorruptible statesman, and a symbol of humility and honesty.
“Beyond his noble traits, President Buhari was a true humanist, a man who consistently placed empathy, compassion, and the welfare of others at the centre of his actions,” he said.
Reflecting on his nearly eight-year service as information minister during his regime as president, Mohammed recalled moments that highlighted the late President’s personal concern for his well-being.
“There was a time he publicly said, ‘I pity Lai Mohammed.’ That remark reflected the bond we shared. The trust and confidence he placed in me kept me going, especially during the most difficult times. In his eyes, I could do no wrong, and that meant everything to me,” he added.
Mohammed noted that their relationship extended far beyond official duties. Even after Buhari left office, the two remained in close contact.
He fondly recalled his last visit to Daura, where he spent three days with the former President, and their final meeting during Ramadan in Kaduna.
“Although I was told he wasn’t receiving visitors that day, he made time for me. We spent hours together, just the two of us. I had no idea it would be our final meeting,” he said.
Mohammed said he continued praying for Buhari’s recovery when news of his illness emerged and described working with him as a privilege he will always treasure.
“I pray Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings and grants him Aljannah Firdaus. May He also comfort his family and all Nigerians mourning the passing of this remarkable man,” he concluded.
