President Bola Tinubu on Monday held a presidential reception at the newly built Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja to honour Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their landmark victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
The reception, which began at exactly 5:05 p.m., saw the champions and their officials warmly received by First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, alongside the Wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Tinubu at the event, praised the team for their outstanding performance and unwavering commitment, describing them as “worthy ambassadors of Nigeria.”
The event was attended by top government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Senate Committee Chairman on Youth and Sports Development, Garba Maidoki; and House Committee Chairman on Sports, Kabiru Amadou.
D’Tigress recently clinched their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, defeating Mali 78–64 in the final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, a victory that further cements their dominance in African women’s basketball.
Monday’s reception follows a similar event held last week in honour of the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s football team, after they secured their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Rabat, Morocco.
