Award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has said that Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, is not driven by ego or desperation for power.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Amazing Africans on Monday, Adichie described Obi as humble, consistent, and deeply committed to Nigeria, even in the face of criticism.

“He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he cares about Nigeria. That’s a very important distinction,” she said.

“Some people seek power out of ego, not service. Peter Obi is different.”

Adichie noted that her admiration for Obi stems from her love for Nigeria, and that his values have continued to resonate with many citizens.

Reflecting on their long-standing relationship, she said “He is one of the simplest men I’ve ever known genuine and consistent. The same person I knew 15 years ago, in terms of values.”

She praised Obi’s humility and sense of accountability, adding “He doesn’t expect to be thanked for doing his job. He sees leadership as a duty, not a favour.”
