Former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, has said that former President Goodluck Jonathan would be the most formidable southern candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2027 presidential election if he decides to contest.

Speaking on Thursday, Lamido stressed that no other southern figure within the PDP matches Jonathan’s political stature, experience in office, calm temperament, and commitment to inclusive leadership.

“With all due respect to the PDP, I do not see a better alternative to Jonathan if the party decides to zone the presidency to the South. Politically, in terms of his time in office, cool-headedness, and willingness to listen and work in partnership, no one compares,” Lamido said.

He added that, when it comes to Nigeria’s leadership, sacrifices are often made for the greater good, citing Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi as leaders he believes would willingly step aside for a consensus candidate if necessary.

On Obi’s recent comment that he would serve only one term if elected, Lamido cautioned against premature political declarations, noting that the 2027 race should be approached with sobriety and strategic thinking.

“Let Nigerians decide first before making such commitments. We should not lose sight of the fact that the contest will be against Tinubu and the APC, which requires a very cool head,” he said.

Criticising President Bola Tinubu’s performance, Lamido accused him of failing to deliver on his campaign promises.

“Tinubu himself said that if he could not deliver power in four years, Nigerians should not vote for him again. Two years in, he has failed. Tinubu, please leave power because you have failed to give us power,” Lamido declared.

“Looking at his record so far, by 12 noon, Tinubu is finished both in the North and the South.”
