The Gombe State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old ward head in Zambuk, Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area, for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl.
The state police spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, identifying the suspect as Mohammed Tukur of Sabon Gari Village, Zambuk.
According to the police, the incident occurred on August 9, around 9 pm, when the suspect allegedly lured the victim (name withheld) to a secluded location where the offence was committed.
He said, “Upon receiving the report, operatives from the Zambuk Police Division swiftly moved to the scene, rescued the victim and took her to the General Hospital, Zambuk, for medical examination.
“The suspect was apprehended and taken into custody immediately.”
The PPRO stated that an investigation was ongoing, reaffirming the command’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims of sexual violence.
He condemned the act and called on residents to promptly report all incidents of sexual abuse to enable timely police intervention.
