Alexander Isak has publicly declared his intention to leave Newcastle United, saying a transfer would be “in the best interests of everyone,” as Liverpool continue to push for his signature.
The Swedish striker, who finished as the Premier League’s second-highest scorer last season, has missed pre-season and Newcastle’s goalless opener against Aston Villa. Liverpool have already seen a £110 million bid rejected, with the Magpies holding out for a British record fee of around £150 million.
Breaking his silence in a social media statement on Tuesday, Isak said he had stayed quiet for too long while “others pushed their own version of events.” He claimed Newcastle broke promises and that trust between him and the club had collapsed.
“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue,” Isak wrote. “That’s where things are for me right now and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”
Reports suggest Isak had been expecting an improved contract, but Newcastle delayed talks due to financial sustainability concerns.
The club responded late Tuesday, expressing disappointment over the striker’s comments but insisting he remains under contract.
“No commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave this summer,” Newcastle said in a statement. “We want to keep our best players, though we listen to their views. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.”
Isak has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances since joining from Real Sociedad in 2022, including the decisive strike against Liverpool in the League Cup final that ended Newcastle’s 70-year trophy drought.
Liverpool, who won last season’s Premier League title, have spent around £300 million this summer while recouping over £200 million in sales. They remain in the market for attacking reinforcements following the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, alongside the tragic loss of Diogo Jota.
Any potential deal for Isak will be in the spotlight when Newcastle host Liverpool at St James’ Park on Monday.
