One person was killed and two others injured on Wednesday after a gunman opened fire at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Dallas, authorities confirmed.
The suspected shooter, who targeted the ICE centre from the rooftop of a nearby building, later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Dallas Police Department announced on X.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said,
“While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop.”
Local media outlet Fox4 reported that the victims were ICE detainees. The gunman shot himself as law enforcement officers moved in.
ICE deputy director Madison Sheahan told Fox News that no ICE personnel were hurt.
“We’ve seen a lot of violence at ICE facilities, and this is not the first time that we’ve seen an attack, even this year at an ICE facility,” Sheahan said.
Vice President JD Vance also condemned the attack, writing on X:
“The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop. I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families.”
ICE, which oversees deportation operations, has faced heightened hostility amid President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. Protests and clashes erupted earlier this year after ICE raids in Los Angeles, prompting the deployment of the National Guard and Marines to the city.
Texas has seen several recent assaults on immigration enforcement facilities. In July, attackers struck an ICE centre in Alvarado, injuring a police officer and defacing property with anti-ICE graffiti. Just days later, a 27-year-old armed man fired multiple rounds at a US Border Patrol site in McAllen before being killed; two officers and a Border Patrol worker were wounded in that incident.
