Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly considering joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the 2027 general elections approach.

This move comes amid growing strength in the opposition coalition, which is actively consulting key political stakeholders nationwide.

Several ADC National Working Committee members, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed Jonathan’s interest in the party. While Jonathan has yet to officially announce his intentions, speculation has risen about a potential presidential run against incumbent President Bola Tinubu.

Despite calls from leaders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urging Jonathan to contest under their banner, the former president seems to be exploring alternative platforms. Public opinion remains divided, especially given the 2018 constitutional amendment that bars individuals sworn in twice as president from running again.

In recent weeks, Jonathan has stepped up public engagements and met with prominent political figures, including Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and ADC National Chairman Senator David Mark.

A source within the ADC confirmed these discussions focused on the 2027 presidential election, with Jonathan seen as a valuable addition to the party.

“There is ongoing communication with Jonathan, and he is viewed as a patriotic Nigerian who would strengthen our party,” the source said. Another insider revealed Jonathan might accept the ADC’s presidential ticket if a consensus is reached with other opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

ADC Youth Leader Balarabe Rufai echoed this sentiment, praising Jonathan’s patriotism and integrity. He described the ADC as the only credible opposition platform, contrasting it with the perceived factionalism in the PDP and the Labour Party’s links to the ruling APC.

Meanwhile, ADC National Treasurer Mani Ibrahim expressed optimism about the party’s chances in the next election, citing widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration’s handling of poverty, insecurity, and the economy.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), however, remains confident. APC Director of Publicity Bala Ibrahim dismissed Jonathan’s potential candidacy, labeling the ADC as disorganized and predicting an easy victory for the APC.

Attempts to reach representatives of the ADC, PDP, and Labour Party for further comments were unsuccessful at press time.
