The internal crisis rocking the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified, following the election of a new state executive committee by the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, popularly known as the Legacy Group.
At the 2025 State Congress held in Benin City on Sunday, Barrister Nosa Ogieva emerged as the new State Chairman, leading a 14-member executive team. Of the 14 positions filled, 11 candidates were returned unopposed, while Tony Aziegbemi, Henry Tenebe, and Victor Enoghama contested for the positions of State Chairman, Secretary, and Deputy State Chairman, respectively. A total of 576 delegates from the 192 wards across the state participated in the congress.
In his acceptance speech, Ogieva described the victory as “the dawn of a new era” for the Edo PDP, pledging to rebuild, reposition, and rebrand the party for future electoral victories.
“We will not betray the trust of our members. Unity and loyalty remain the bedrock of our great party, and under our leadership, the PDP in Edo State will be revived to win elections again,” he assured.
Party leader Chief Dan Orbih, who also spoke at the event, blamed former Governor Godwin Obaseki for the protracted internal crisis, alleging that he had fallen out with most stakeholders since joining the PDP. Orbih said the party’s poor performance in recent by-elections was a reflection of its weakened structure under the current state leadership.
He urged members to support the new executive to restore the PDP’s lost glory and rebuild its influence across Edo State.
