The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially presented a party membership card to Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, confirming his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party.
The presentation ceremony took place on Tuesday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, with the National Secretary of the party, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, handing over the card to the governor.
The APC, in a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, said the move formally marks Mbah’s entry into the party. The announcement followed the governor’s state broadcast earlier in the day, titled “Charting a New Course: Transition from PDP to APC.”
“The APC National Working Committee (NWC) has formally presented the party’s membership card to the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, officially marking his entry into the APC,” the statement read.
In his address, Governor Mbah said the decision to leave the PDP was a well-considered and strategic move, following months of consultation with political, religious, and traditional stakeholders.
According to him, the South East had remained loyal to the PDP for decades but was “often disregarded when it mattered most.” He explained that joining the APC would give Enugu State a stronger voice at the national level and better align the state’s development agenda with federal policies.
“This is not about personal ambition. It is about ensuring that Enugu’s development is fully aligned with the programmes of the Federal Government under President Tinubu. We are taking this step for the greater good of our people,” he said.
Mbah praised President Bola Tinubu as “a partner in purpose and a leader with the courage to make tough choices for Nigeria’s progress,” stressing that the move to APC was a deliberate step toward a stronger and more inclusive future for the state.
He assured residents that all ongoing projects, including Smart Green Schools, healthcare centres, and road infrastructure would be completed as planned.
“Our Igbo DNA does not change; our destiny does not change. What changes is that our vision now finds stronger reinforcement at the federal level,” he added.
Mbah was accompanied to the ceremony by top political figures from Enugu, including former governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, members of the State Executive Council, National Assembly members, and local government chairmen.
The governor also reaffirmed Enugu’s commitment to the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme, which aims to empower 8.8 million Nigerians across 8,809 electoral wards nationwide.
