The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its dedication to upholding the rule of law and maintaining public order, following a Federal High Court injunction restraining #FreeNnamdiKanu protesters and related groups from demonstrating in designated areas of Abuja.

The injunction, issued by Justice M.G. Umar on October 17, 2025, in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025 (Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Omoyele Sowore & 4 others), prohibits the respondents and any affiliates from staging protests within and near key government locations.

These include Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, the Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.

In a statement released on Saturday, Force Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin called on all parties involved—whether supporting or opposing the campaign for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release—to comply fully with the court’s directive.

While emphasizing the police’s recognition of citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and free expression, the statement stressed that such rights must be exercised responsibly and within legal limits to safeguard public safety and national security.

“The Court’s order is intended as a protection of constitutional freedoms, not a restriction,” the statement said.

The police also warned protesters and counter-protesters to avoid restricted areas and refrain from actions that could spark violence or disrupt public peace.

Security personnel have been deployed across the Federal Capital Territory to ensure smooth traffic flow, protect lives and property, and uphold peace.

The Force cautioned that anyone using protests as a cover to incite violence, carry weapons, damage property, or commit crimes would face arrest and prosecution under applicable laws governing public order and violent conduct.

Additionally, those who foment unrest via social media or other digital platforms will be tracked and held accountable based on digital evidence.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has directed the FCT Commissioner of Police and other security commands to enforce the court’s ruling and safeguard residents’ safety as well as lawful activities throughout Abuja.

The statement urged protest organisers and participants to avoid prohibited zones, refrain from carrying weapons or provocative behavior, and seek redress through legal channels.

It reassured law-abiding citizens that security arrangements are in place, encouraging residents to continue their daily activities without fear.
