Security operatives on Monday disrupted a protest in Abuja demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by firing multiple rounds of tear gas.
The protest, tagged #ReleaseNnamdiKanuNow, was expected to begin around the Transcorp Hilton area and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
However, police arrived early, cordoning off the area and using tear gas to disperse both protesters and passersby before a large crowd could gather.
Among those affected was human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, who had mobilised supporters for the protest.
Our correspondent observed a heavy security presence across key parts of the city earlier in the day. Armed personnel from the Nigerian Army, Police Force, and Department of State Services (DSS) were stationed at strategic locations including the Three Arms Zone, Eagle Square, Unity Fountain, and routes leading to Aso Rock.
