The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 17-year-old boy, Auwal Dahiru, alongside five other suspects, for allegedly plucking out the eyes of his seven-year-old sister, Rukayya Muhammad, in a suspected money ritual attempt in Bayan Dutse Village, Wailo, Kubi Ward, Ganjuwa Local Government Area of the state.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Wakil, who described the act as “gruesome and heartbreaking.”

According to the statement, the incident occurred on October 17, 2025, when one Muhammad Adamu of Bayan Dutse Village reported to the Soro Divisional Police Headquarters that at about 8 p.m., the suspect lured his sister into a nearby bush, attacked her, and forcefully removed her eyes.

Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer, SP Aliyu Goni, led a team of detectives to the scene, where the suspect was immediately apprehended. The victim was rescued and rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, for urgent medical attention.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the girl permanently lost her eyesight after her brother mutilated both eyes in a desperate attempt to use them for ritual purposes.

“Unfortunately, a medical doctor (eye specialist) at the hospital confirmed that the young girl will never regain her vision for the rest of her life,” the statement read.

Wakil added that other suspects — Mohammed Rabiu (19), Saleh Ibrahim (20), Nasiru Muhammad (of Soro town), Hassan Garba (of Soro town), and Garba Dahiru (43) — were later arrested in connection with the crime.

He said all suspects voluntarily confessed during interrogation, adding that investigation is ongoing to uncover the motive and ensure full prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation.
