Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja for Belem, Brazil, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, which is set to begin on Tuesday, November 6.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communication, titled ‘VP Shettima Departs Abuja For 30th UN Climate Change Summit In Belem, Brazil’.

Hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in collaboration with global stakeholders, the two-day summit will take place in the Amazonian capital of Pará State.

Themed “Climate Action and Implementation,” the event will focus on adaptation, forest protection, biodiversity, and climate justice as part of efforts to accelerate global environmental reforms.

According to the statement, “On the first day of engagements in Belem, Senator Shettima will attend the general plenary of leaders where he is expected to present Nigeria’s climate action address.”

He will also participate in the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund and a roundtable on Climate and Nature chaired by President Lula. Later that day, he is expected to attend an Amazonian Cocktail for heads of delegation, hosted by the Brazilian leader.

On the second day, Shettima will join two additional roundtables led by Lula, focusing on energy transition and the review of the Paris Agreement, particularly the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the global climate finance framework.

Shettima will also hold bilateral meetings to secure Nigeria’s role in global carbon markets, a move projected to unlock $2.5–$3 billion annually in carbon finance over the next decade to support emission reduction goals.

Following the summit, the Vice President will proceed to Brasília for a reciprocal diplomatic visit to his Brazilian counterpart, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who visited Nigeria in June.

During the June visit, both nations signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in critical sectors including defence, agriculture, energy, and cultural exchange.

While in Brasília, Shettima will lead bilateral talks aimed at strengthening Nigeria–Brazil South–South cooperation before returning to Nigeria at the conclusion of his engagements.
