Nollywood actress and filmmaker Regina Daniels has pleaded with Nigerians to stop attacking her mother, Rita Daniels, amid her ongoing marital dispute with her husband, Senator Ned Nwoko.
In an emotional video shared on Instagram on Wednesday, the actress spoke candidly about the painful realities of her marriage and the backlash her family has faced since her union with the Delta-born politician became public.
Regina revealed that her mother and siblings had initially advised her against marrying Nwoko, but she followed her heart despite their warnings.
“The main essence of this video is to please stop insulting my mom,” she began. “She’s the best thing that ever happened to me. She’s my god on earth and has been strong for seven years, holding everything together while taking all the insults meant for me. But the truth is, I’m the one with the coconut head. I was warned, but I still fell in love and I’m ashamed to say it, but I actually did.”
The actress dismissed claims that her marriage was driven by financial gain, insisting that her family was not broke at the time.
“You all keep saying I got married out of greed. Excuse me, no. We were not broke. What kind of money can a man give to a mother to buy her child, the same child who provides everything in the house? My mother raised all her children through me. I was a blessing, a gift to her,” she said.
Regina went on to disclose that the overwhelming pressure surrounding her marriage once pushed her to a dark place, where she even considered ending her life.
“I was desperate. I loved Ned so much that when my family refused, I drove out at night, saying I’d rather die. My brothers were fighting, breaking bottles, searching for me. I even went to the police station and said, ‘Arrest me, my family doesn’t want me to marry the love of my life.’”
Despite their differences, the mother of two expressed continued respect for her estranged husband.
“I still care about and respect him. That’s what love is, care and respect. The only reason I’m not fighting him is because I want Munir and Khalifa’s father name to remain strong. But I’ll fight for my children. I’ll raise them with or without his support,” she vowed.
Regina said her decision to speak publicly was inspired by the love and solidarity her family has shown her amid the turmoil.
“My family is in turmoil, but we’ll come out of it. My brothers, mom, and sisters have all been fighting for me. Seeing that gave me the courage to make this video,” she said.
Her outpouring comes weeks after Regina accused Senator Nwoko of physically assaulting her, an allegation he has since denied, claiming her behaviour was influenced by substance abuse.
The actress, who shares two children with the lawmaker, maintained that her priority now is to protect and nurture her sons as she focuses on rebuilding her life.
