The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the region as political instability continues to intensify.
ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, announced the decision on Tuesday during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, held in Abuja.
The emergency declaration follows a wave of coups, attempted coups, and failed mutinies that have swept through multiple West African countries in recent months—an alarming pattern that has raised concerns about the future of governance and stability in the sub-region.
Touray stressed that the situation calls for deep reflection and decisive action. According to him, the recent events point to the “urgent need to safeguard our democracy” and reinforce security across member states.
He added that the region must now invest more deliberately in strengthening political institutions, enhancing security operations, and preventing further destabilization.
