The Nigerian Army has restated its commitment to deepening collaboration with the National Assembly to strengthen national security, especially across the country’s borders.

This assurance was conveyed by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, during a visit by the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Border Security, led by Mohammed Isa Anka.

The update was shared on Tuesday through a post by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, on the Army’s official X handle.

Shaibu noted that the military is currently engaged in extensive operations along Nigeria’s borders to counter persistent cross-border threats, including transnational crimes, smuggling, and the infiltration of hostile groups.

According to him, these efforts are challenged by numerous illegal entry routes and limited mobility and logistics resources.

He emphasized the need for a coordinated, multi-agency approach involving the military, lawmakers, the Ministry of Interior, the Nigerian Immigration Service, and the Nigeria Customs Service.

The COAS reaffirmed the Army’s unwavering dedication to supporting government strategies aimed at combating insecurity.

He appealed to the National Assembly for increased budgetary support, particularly for surveillance technology and the establishment of forward operating bases in border communities to enhance intelligence gathering and rapid response capacity.

Responding, committee chairman Mohammed Anka commended the Army for its role in securing Nigeria’s borders with Chad, Cameroon, and other neighboring countries. He also pledged sustained legislative cooperation and support to improve national security.
