President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Medical Sciences, Azare, in Bauchi State, in honour of the late and highly respected Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

The President made the announcement on Saturday during a condolence visit to the cleric’s family at his residence in Bauchi.

According to Tinubu, the decision was taken to preserve the memory of the renowned scholar and recognise his lifelong contributions to humanity, religious learning and peaceful coexistence.

“From today, I announce this change of name to immortalise him,” the President said. “The Federal University of Medical Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, will now be known as Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University. May God bless his soul.”

Describing Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s passing as a major loss not only to Bauchi State but to the entire nation, Tinubu said the late cleric was widely known for his humility, selfless service and steadfast commitment to the promotion of Islam, peace and moral values.

He prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the departed scholar, asking that he be granted Jannatul Firdaus, and urged Nigerians to continue praying for peace, unity and harmony across the country.

The President also offered words of comfort to the family, as well as to the government and people of Bauchi State.

Speaking on behalf of the family, the eldest son of the late cleric, Sheikh Ibrahim Usman Bauchi, expressed deep appreciation to the President for the condolence visit, prayers and the honour accorded their father. He also thanked Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, for his consistent support and solidarity with the family.

In his remarks, Governor Mohammed described the renaming of the university as a fitting tribute to Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s enduring legacy, noting that the gesture reflected the profound impact the scholar had on religious education and societal values.

The President was accompanied on the visit by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni; and his son, Seyi Tinubu, alongside other senior government officials.

Tinubu arrived at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, Bauchi, at about 4:09 p.m., where he was received with a guard of honour by the Nigerian Air Force. He was welcomed by Bauchi State Governor Bala Muhammad; Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang; the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; and Senator Shehu Buba, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District.

The condolence visit formed part of the President’s efforts to sympathise with the family and followers of the late Islamic scholar, whose influence and contributions to Islamic scholarship spanned several decades within Nigeria and beyond.
