Former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has been hospitalised following a road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday.

PUNCH Online gathered that the crash occurred shortly after 11am in the Makun area of the expressway, just before the Danco Filling Station and ahead of the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.

An eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, said the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck. Joshua reportedly sustained minor injuries, while two other occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.

According to Orojo, the convoy consisted of two vehicles — a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated at the back of the Lexus, alongside another passenger, while two others were in the front seats. His security team followed in the second vehicle.

He said rescue efforts began immediately after the crash, with bystanders flagging down vehicles for assistance before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived.

“The passenger beside the driver and the person seated next to Joshua died on the spot,” the eyewitness said.

Confirming the development, Oluseyi stated that Joshua and other injured persons were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

“The Ogun State Police Command confirms a road accident today in front of Sinoma, before Danco, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Anthony Joshua and other injured persons have been taken to the hospital. Further updates will be communicated,” he said.
