The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed the road crash involving British-Nigerian boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, to excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking.

The crash occurred on Monday around 12 noon along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, Ogun State.

In a statement made available to PUNCH Online, the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, said preliminary investigations by the FRSC Ogun Sector Command revealed that the accident involved a black Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and a stationary red Sinotruck parked by the roadside.

According to the statement, five adult males were involved in the crash, two of whom died on the spot. One occupant sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Joshua was rescued alive with minor injuries.

“The injured victim was evacuated to a medical facility for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu,” the statement said.

The FRSC added that the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division had been notified for further investigation and documentation.

Preliminary findings indicated that the Lexus SUV was suspected to have been travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit before losing control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashing into the stationary truck.

“The primary causes of the crash—excessive speed and wrongful overtaking—are serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” the statement noted.

The corps conveyed the condolences of the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua and the injured victim a speedy recovery.

The FRSC also urged motorists to prioritise safety by avoiding speeding and dangerous overtaking, especially during the festive season, while reaffirming its commitment to safer highways through enforcement, rescue operations and sustained public education.
