The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has distanced himself from a political article speculating about the 2027 Niger State governorship race, describing it as unauthorised and misleading.
The controversial piece, titled “Malagi 2027,” reportedly explored possible political permutations ahead of the next gubernatorial election in Niger State. Its publication has now led to the suspension of the aide who authored it.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Rabiu Ibrahim, the ministry made it clear that the article was written and published without the minister’s knowledge or approval.
“The write-up and all its contexts are hereby vehemently disclaimed,” the statement said, while urging members of the public to ignore the publication entirely.
According to the ministry, Idris remains fully committed to his duties at the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation and has no interest in engaging in political distractions or premature election discussions.
“The Honourable Minister is fully focused on his responsibility superintending the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation and has no room for political distractions,” the statement stressed.
It further clarified that the minister neither directed nor authorised the publication of the article in any form.
To address the situation, the ministry disclosed that disciplinary measures had already been taken. An immediate investigation has been ordered, and the aide responsible for the article has been issued a suspension letter with immediate effect.
“The Honourable Minister has directed an immediate investigation, and the aide has been issued a letter of suspension,” the statement added.
The ministry also moved to dispel speculations suggesting political tension between the minister and the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago. It emphasised that both leaders enjoy a cordial and mutually respectful relationship, built around the shared goal of advancing the interests of Niger State.
“It is noteworthy that the Honourable Minister and his home state governor, His Excellency Mohammed Umaru Bago, enjoy a positive, mutual relationship for the greater good of Niger State,” the statement noted, warning that premature election speculation could undermine these objectives.
