The management of the Ogun Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ), Igbesa, Ogun State, has dismissed reports that the fire incident recorded in the zone on Sunday was caused by a gas explosion.
In a statement released on Monday, the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority and China-Africa Investment FZC said the fire did not affect any residential areas and that no casualties were recorded.
The statement, signed by Mr Steve Makanjuola on behalf of both organisations, disclosed that the incident occurred at Good Mattress FZE, one of the companies operating within the free trade zone.
According to the management, the fire was swiftly brought under control by OGFTZ’s internal fire service team, working in collaboration with the Ogun State Fire Service and other private emergency responders.
“The timely intervention successfully prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining enterprises. There were no casualties recorded, and the incident was effectively de-escalated before it could pose any wider risk,” the statement read.
The management clarified that contrary to reports circulating online, the incident was not caused by a gas explosion and did not extend beyond the affected facility.
While investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, the management assured that verified findings would be communicated through official channels.
The free trade zone operators reaffirmed their commitment to strict compliance with safety, legal and regulatory standards and commended government agencies, host communities and private partners for their support during the incident.
They also urged media organisations to verify information through official sources to prevent the spread of misinformation, assuring the public that the situation was fully under control.
