Lagos State Governor and Chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and former interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande, as he marked his 87th birthday on Friday.

Sanwo-Olu described the former Osun State governor as a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history, whose life and career continue to inspire generations of leaders across the country.

Chief Akande, fondly called “Baba Omo Kekeke,” was praised for his unwavering commitment to good governance, true federalism and democratic ideals, which the governor said have defined his more than five decades of political engagement.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu said the elder statesman remains a role model to many Nigerians because of his courage, integrity and selfless dedication to public service.

The Lagos governor commended Akande’s service as the first civilian governor of Osun State in the Fourth Republic, noting that his leadership style reflected discipline, accountability and a genuine concern for the welfare of the people.

Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged Akande’s pivotal role in the formation of the APC, where he served as the party’s first interim National Chairman, as well as his continued influence in strengthening the party in Osun State, the South-West and across the country.

According to the statement, the governor said, “On behalf of my family, the government and the people of Lagos State, as well as leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress, I congratulate our father, Chief Bisi Akande, on his 87th birthday.

“Chief Bisi Akande is a true democrat and a respected political icon who has remained steadfast in the progressive movement and contributed immensely to political development and governance in Nigeria for over five decades. He is a passionate advocate of good governance, restructuring and true federalism.”

Sanwo-Olu described Akande as an exceptional administrator whose record of selfless service remains a lesson for current and aspiring public office holders, adding that his consistency and integrity throughout Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle set him apart as a dependable and courageous leader.

He further prayed for the elder statesman’s continued good health and strength, saying Nigeria still needs his wisdom, experience and exemplary leadership.

The statement concluded by describing Chief Akande as one of Nigeria’s foremost progressive politicians, with a distinguished career spanning political activism, governance and party building over several decades.
