The Osun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing of a former unit chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Kazeem Oyewole, who was allegedly murdered by suspected hoodlums in Osogbo on Sunday.

The incident reportedly sparked tension in several motor parks across the Osogbo metropolis, as individuals believed to be associates of the deceased were said to have moved around major parks, allegedly searching for those responsible for Oyewole’s death.

Oyewole, who served as part-time chairman of the NURTW Aregbe Unit between 2018 and 2022, was said to have been attacked around Elelede Junction in the afternoon. As of press time, the exact circumstances surrounding the killing remained unclear.

A resident who witnessed the incident from a distance and spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons told PUNCH Metro that some hoodlums had stationed themselves at Elelede Junction, allegedly extorting money from passersby under the guise of raising funds for a proposed carnival.

The resident said a motorcycle carrying two passengers later arrived at the scene, adding that the hoodlums forced the riders to disembark and attacked them.

“I heard gunshots, and later they identified one of the people they attacked as Kazeem. They then brought large stones and smashed his head. He died on the spot,” the witness said, adding that the second passenger escaped with injuries while the assailants fled before the police arrived.

A shop owner at Elelede Junction, identified simply as Basira, said business activities in the area were abruptly disrupted by the violence.

She explained that the victim was later identified as Kazeem Oyewole by members of the NURTW who arrived after the incident, noting that he was a former part-time chairman of an NURTW unit along the Osogbo–Gbongan Road in the Aregbe area.

Our correspondent, who monitored the situation at the Old Garage and Aregbe motor parks on Sunday evening, observed that residents stayed away from the parks for fear of reprisals, while the presence of hoodlums was also noticed around the areas.

Confirming the incident, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command had commenced an investigation into the killing.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred at Orita Elelede in Osogbo. Our men were deployed immediately after the information reached us, but unfortunately, one person was confirmed dead. He was identified as Kazeem; other name unknown. Investigation has commenced,” he said.

On security measures to prevent further violence, Ojelabi added that the police were monitoring the situation and keeping watch over the motor parks.

The killing is the latest in a string of violent incidents involving NURTW leaders in the state. On November 27, 2025, a prominent NURTW leader in Osun, Adeboye Ademoroti, was shot dead by unknown assailants in Ilesa. Security sources said Ademoroti and another individual were attacked by gunmen in the Olomilagbala area of the town.
