The Ogun State Government has urged bloggers, online publishers and content creators to uphold professional ethics and avoid abusive or reckless criticism in the course of their work.
The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Mr Kayode Akinmade, made the call while hosting members of Gateway Bloggers, an association of online publishers and content creators in the state.
Akinmade stressed that professionalism in media practice is defined by responsibility, patriotism and altruism, particularly in the discharge of the media’s constitutional role as a watchdog.
He noted that the media plays a critical role in promoting good governance and strengthening democratic values, but warned that such responsibilities must be exercised within the confines of the law and with a strong sense of accountability.
“As bloggers and content creators, we must be responsible in our social engagement,” Akinmade said. “We are not saying you should avoid pointing out what is wrong. On the contrary, we are open to constructive criticism that is fair, factual and aimed at improvement.
“However, criticism should not be reckless or abusive. There are appropriate channels through which concerns can be raised and government officials engaged. Leadership should not be reduced to insults or personal attacks, whether under the guise of religion or politics.”
He emphasised the need for all stakeholders — government, media and citizens — to play their roles responsibly to ensure the collective development of Ogun State.
Akinmade also highlighted the economic strides of the Abiodun administration, describing it as one focused on expanding economic opportunities and strengthening the state’s gross domestic product.
According to him, ongoing plans, including the reactivation of the Olokola Seaport, would position Ogun as an oil-producing state, with far-reaching benefits such as job creation, increased revenue and broader economic growth.
“This is a journey we are taking together, and it is important that we document and preserve this history. That is why partnership with the media is essential,” he added.
Earlier, the Coordinator of Gateway Bloggers, Mr Olamide David, said the association was committed to showcasing Ogun State’s progress, opportunities and potential beyond stereotypes and misinformation.
David said bloggers exist to open up the state to the world and demonstrate that many practitioners are responsible, professional and guided by ethical storytelling.
“We are seeking stronger collaboration with the state government’s media office,” he said. “By sharing verified information and promoting government initiatives, we believe we can project Ogun State accurately and credibly to a global audience.”
He described the meeting as the beginning of a productive partnership built on trust, transparency and shared goals for the development of the state.
