Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying it has become increasingly difficult for leaders and stakeholders to openly speak truth to power under the current government.
Makinde made the remarks at the weekend during the 60th birthday celebration of the Oyo State Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Rev. Samson Anetomobi. Speaking at the event, the governor contrasted the present administration with what he described as a more consultative style of governance under the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
The event was attended by several prominent figures, including former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, whom Makinde said he deeply misses for his leadership approach, particularly during critical national moments.
According to the governor, the Tinubu administration’s handling of the controversial tax reform bills exemplifies what he sees as a shrinking space for open dialogue. He said state governors and other stakeholders raised concerns and requested that the bills be reviewed collectively, but their appeals were ignored.
“You cannot speak truth to power in this dispensation,” Makinde said, lamenting that despite calls for broader consultation, the tax bills were pushed through. He described the process as an affront, even to governors, adding that there remains confusion over what was eventually passed by the National Assembly and what was signed into law.
Reflecting on Osinbajo’s tenure as Chairman of the National Economic Council, Makinde recalled how his leadership influenced Oyo State’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said Osinbajo’s guidance at the time played a key role in his decision not to impose a total lockdown in the state.
Makinde expressed personal regret over Osinbajo’s exit from office, noting that the absence of inclusive leadership has contributed to what he described as a noticeable shift in governance style.
“Sir, I personally miss you in that position,” Makinde said, stressing that his comments were not politically motivated but borne out of concern for the country’s direction.
