Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has explained his decision to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the move was driven by the need for political stability, faster development and improved welfare for residents of the state.
Yusuf formally defected to the ruling party on Monday, a move confirmed in a statement released on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa.
According to the governor, the decision followed extensive consultations and a careful evaluation of Kano’s political and developmental needs.
He said aligning with the APC, which controls the Federal Government, would better position the state to access federal support and accelerate development.
Yusuf stressed that his return to the party was not motivated by personal ambition but by what he described as the overriding interest of Kano and its people.
The governor added that closer cooperation with the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would enhance service delivery, strengthen intergovernmental collaboration and unlock new economic and infrastructural opportunities for the state.
Yusuf noted that residents of Kano were more concerned about tangible progress than political rivalries, assuring them that the defection would translate into visible development and economic growth. He also reassured his former political allies that the move would not erode existing relationships or diminish their contributions to the state.
At a reception organised to welcome him back into the APC, former Kano State Governor and ex-national chairman of the party, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, formally received Yusuf and declared him the leader of the APC in Kano State.
Ganduje also announced that party members who had shown interest in contesting the 2027 governorship election had agreed to step down in support of Yusuf’s re-election bid.
Also speaking at the event, Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, called on party members to mobilise ahead of the next general elections and give total support to the governor’s second-term ambition. The Kano APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, assured party faithful of unity and full backing for the governor.
The event was attended by federal and state lawmakers, former deputy governors, ministers and other key APC stakeholders across Kano State.
