The Confederation of African Football has reaffirmed that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will take place as scheduled in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, dismissing speculation that the tournament could be shifted to 2028.
CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, made the clarification on Friday after a meeting of the CAF Executive Committee. He rejected reports suggesting that concerns over the preparedness of the three East African nations might force a postponement.
According to him, CAF remains fully committed to staging the tournament in East Africa and is satisfied with the level of progress recorded so far.
“We have done a lot to ensure AFCON is held in East Africa, and our commitment remains to host it there,” Motsepe said.
He expressed confidence that the competition would be a success, adding that CAF would continue to work closely with the host countries to ensure that infrastructure, logistics and other critical areas meet required international standards.
Although official dates are yet to be announced, CAF has pencilled the tournament for June and July 2027. The proposed schedule places the competition just weeks before Kenya’s general elections expected in August that year.
The 2027 edition will make history as the first Africa Cup of Nations to be jointly hosted by three countries – Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
East Africa last staged the continental showpiece in 1976 when Ethiopia hosted the tournament.
CAF has also stressed that renovation of stadiums, upgrading of training facilities and improvement of transport networks across the three nations are being closely monitored to ensure they align with global best practices ahead of the competition.
