Three operatives of the Imo State Police Command have been dismissed over allegations bordering on kidnapping, armed robbery, and car snatching, authorities confirmed on Friday.
The affected officers — ex-Sgt Gift Ekwueme, ex-Sgt Ikechukwu Eto, and ex-Cpr Divine Okwuaru — are currently in detention at the Imo State Police Headquarters and are expected to be arraigned before a court of law.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, told PUNCH Online that the officers were dismissed after being found guilty during an orderly room trial.
“Yes, the incident happened, and after we received the complaint, the police swung into investigation.
“They were arrested, detained, faced an orderly room trial, and after they were found guilty, they were dismissed and the Imo CP has ratified it. They are now ex-Policemen. They will be arraigned in the law court for prosecution,” he said.
The dismissed officers were accused of abducting and extorting Mr Obinna Egbu in Owerri on February 8, 2026. They allegedly posed as members of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and, alongside a civilian driver identified as Alex Chukwu, reportedly extorted ₦1.7 million from the victim at gunpoint.
Okoye noted that the dismissal serves as a stern warning to other operatives within the command.
He added that the new Commissioner of Police in the state, Audu Garba Bosso, has made it clear that acts of corruption, high-handedness, and professional misconduct will not be tolerated, stressing that offenders will face strict consequences.
The incident has reportedly sent shockwaves across the command, reinforcing the leadership’s stance on accountability and discipline within the force.
