President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

Egbetokun tendered his resignation on Tuesday, citing pressing family considerations. His departure brings an early end to a four-year tenure that began in June 2023 and was scheduled to run until June 2027, following amendments to the Police Act that allowed an Inspector-General to complete a full term.

In a statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu confirmed that he received the resignation letter earlier in the day and expressed gratitude to the outgoing police chief for his service.

The President commended Egbetokun for what he described as decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, praising his dedication, professionalism and commitment to strengthening the country’s internal security framework during his time in office.

Announcing the new appointment, the statement noted that, in view of prevailing security challenges across the country and in line with existing laws, Tinubu approved the elevation of Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu to serve in an acting capacity.

The President said he is confident that Disu’s operational experience and leadership record will provide steady direction for the Nigeria Police Force at what he described as a critical period.

In compliance with the Police Act 2020, Tinubu is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General. His name will subsequently be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving national security, strengthening institutions and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable and fully equipped to carry out its constitutional duties.
