Costa Rican footballer Derrickson Quiros has announced the end of his engagement just three days after proposing to his partner in front of fans at the Mario Camposeco Stadium.
Quiros had gone viral after dropping to one knee following his side Club Xelajú MC’s 4–2 victory over Deportivo Marquense in the Guatemalan top flight.
The romantic gesture drew loud applause from hundreds of supporters inside the stadium, with many celebrating what appeared to be a fairy-tale moment.
The midfielder later shared photos and videos of the proposal on social media, describing his partner as his “life partner” and expressing deep affection.
However, in a surprising twist, Quiros confirmed just three days later that the relationship had ended.
Speaking via Mexican outlet Latinus and in a post shared on Instagram, the footballer acknowledged the breakup.
“Yes, it’s true that my relationship ended,” he said. “It was a difficult personal situation, like any breakup, but I prefer to handle it with respect and maturity. I’m not going to speak ill of anyone or go into details because it was a relationship that was important to me at the time.”
His former fiancée also addressed the situation in a brief message shared on her social media page. According to Globo, she wrote: “In the end, there will never be a better answer than the one that silence offers.”
Quiros concluded by thanking fans for their support and asking for privacy as he moves forward.
“Now I’m focused on my career, my team, and continuing to grow as a person,” he said. “I appreciate everyone’s support and hope they can respect this moment.”
