The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has found a prima facie case of medical negligence and professional misconduct in connection with the death of Master Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The decision followed a petition submitted to the Council on January 16, 2026. In response, medical personnel from Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital and Atlantis Paediatric Hospital filed affidavits and appeared before the MDCN Investigative Panel to give oral evidence.

At its 25th session held in Abuja on February 17–18, 2026, the Panel concluded that there was sufficient evidence to establish a prima facie case against three doctors: Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare; Dr. Titus Ogundare, an anaesthesiologist at Euracare; and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Director of Atlantis Paediatric Hospital.

The Council subsequently placed the three doctors on interim suspension pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings. In addition, the Panel identified professional misconduct involving 10 other practitioners from Atlantis Paediatric Hospital.

According to the MDCN, the matters have been referred to the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal for formal hearing and determination, in line with its statutory mandate.

The Council clarified that its findings are preliminary and do not amount to a final verdict. It stressed that the affected practitioners will be granted a full hearing before the Tribunal, where all evidence will be thoroughly examined before a final decision is reached.

Further proceedings are expected to begin soon, with the MDCN assuring the public of a transparent process guided by its regulatory framework.
